SanDisk slotRadio

slotradio 300x225 SanDisk slotRadio ReviewThe new SanDisk slotRadio is an unusual audio player. For just under $100 you get an MP3 player that comes bundled with a slotRadio microSD card that packs in 1000 songs. This player isn’t really an iPod competitor, it’s not about packing in the latest technology and features, but rather it’s all about value for your money and ease of use. It’s also one of the few digital audio players to ever come with music straight out of the box, and in this case it’s packing a ton of music.

In the Box:
The slotRadio comes with some typical accessories: a silicon protective case, a USB cable, ear phones, and AC adapter for your electrical outlet. The other end of the AC adapter attaches to the USB cable. Nothing here is especially out of the ordinary, but including a protective case is appreciated. Of course included is the slotRadio itself and a slotRadio microSD with preloaded songs.

Design:
The SanDisk slotRadio is a little bit bigger than the iPod shuffle and even has a metal clip attached to the back of it for easy attachment to your jeans or jacket. The casing is metal and the display is comprised of a black and white LCD and directionals to scroll through songs in either in forward or reverse. The top of the player has a switch to power it on, select either FM Radio or play your MP3s.  There is also the slot to insert your microSD card. On the front face of the player, the right side of the player has a next button for songs in a playlist while the left side of the player has two volume buttons (+ -). The bottom of slotRadio has a USB connection and an input for your headset. Overall the design is very simple and lightweight and you could easily slip this into your pocket or clip it on to your shorts and forget it’s even there.

Interface:

The menu has a few simple but cool animations which jazz up the player but they are only in black and white. Operating the device is very easy and won’t take too much to get used to. But other then that the slotRadio’s design is very simple and so is its feature set. I was very impressed with the FM radio feature. I was able to pick up a static free signal immediately and listen to all my favorite channels. There is also the ability to create preset channels by holding down the ‘next button’ for a few seconds on the right side of the slotRadio. Overall, this player is all about getting the most music for your money.
The slotRadio player can accept any other microSD card and it will play MP3 files off it.  If you want to put on additional MP3 files, just drag and drop them on to your slotRadio player, you’ll be able to do so via a drag and drop interface on both Mac and PC. However, you are not able to see any of the music that comes preloaded on the slotRadio card. In contrast, the slotMusic cards for the slotMusic player are totally DRM free so that means you can drag and drop their music files wherever you’d like and delete them if you so choose. However the music that comes bundled on the slotRadio player’s card is a different story. SanDisk says that they are working on mobile applications that will let you take the slotRadio music cards and listen to its music on mobile phones. They also have slotRadio genre cards in the works, including one which just contains country music.

Artificial Pancreas – Device for Diabetes Patients

Scientists at London have used an “Artificial Pancreas” system of pumps and monitors to improve blood sugar control in diabetes patients in the first study to show the new device works better than conventional treatment. Researchers from Britain’s Cambridge University tested the device on 17 children with type 1 diabetes during a series of nights in hospital and found it kept their blood sugar levels within the “normal” range 60 per cent of the time.

HOW IT WORKS?
How it works
The new system, which involves patients wearing a matchbox-sized monitor and a similar-sized pump with a tube to deliver insulin into the body, also halved the amount of time blood sugar dropped to worrying or dangerous levels, they said. Medical device makers have been working for years to develop a so-called artificial pancreas to deliver insulin to patients with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which the body destroys its own ability to make insulin. The bodies of type 1 diabetes sufferers become unable to properly break down sugar and if untreated, blood vessels and nerves are destroyed, organs fail and patients die.
“These devices could transform the management of type 1 diabetes, but it is likely to be a gradual process,” Roman Hovorka of Cambridge, who led the research, said in a telephone interview.
He said the results were “an important stepping stone” towards bringing an artificial pancreas to the commercial market, but predicted several years yet of refinement before it could be used day and night by patients. “It’s a bit like with mobile phones. When we started, the technology wasn’t very good and the functionality was limited, and it took a number of generations to move to the device that we have now. I see the same thing with this system.”

24-HOUR CHECKS
The goal is to create a device that can check patients’ blood day and night. The Cambridge study found their device performed better than a conventional pump, which delivers insulin at pre-set rates and which kept blood sugar levels around normal for 40 per cent of the time compared with 60 per cent for the artificial pancreas. Hovorka said the findings were particularly encouraging because the study included nights when the children went to bed after eating a large evening meal or having done exercise — both of which can affect blood sugar levels.

iOS Jailbreakers Dig Up a Wormy Little Exploit

iOS Jailbreakers Dig Up a Wormy Little ExploitHackers at JailbreakMe.com have revealed an iOS vulnerability that could apparently give nefarious exploiters a great deal of control over an iPhone. Apple has promised that a fix is on the way, though the jailbreak group has already issued its own patch, meaning that for the moment, one's best protection against this particular flaw could be to jailbreak one's iPhone -- though that could open it up to other vulnerabilities.

Zero-day vulnerabilities in Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS that are used to jailbreak iPhones and iPads could also be used to access confidential information, according to the German Federal Office for Information Security. The bug, exposed by a team of hackers at JailbreakMe.com, exploits vulnerabilities on PDFs. It allows users of an Apple device that runs on iOS version 4.3 through 4.3.3 to jailbreak an iPhone or iPad, meaning that user now has a new level of control over the device. Typically, this is done in order to install apps that haven't been given the Apple seal of approval.

"While this allows users to run any apps they want, even those not reviewed by Apple, it is not without risk. In the past we have seen jailbreaks exploited to install banking malware on vulnerable systems. Essentially, this defeats the entire security posture of the device," Tim Armstrong, malware researcher at Kapersky Labs, told MacNewsWorld. In the wrong hands, the vulnerability could prove invasive. "Had this exploit been released by a malicious party, it could have been used to hijack personal information on the device, install malware, surveil the user by tracking their GPS information, access the camera and/or microphone, or a perform a myriad of other nefarious tasks," Jonathan Zdziarski, iPhone hacker and data forensics analyst, told MacNewsWorld. Apparently the developer realizes this is a more dangerous threat than other exploits, because the group released a fix in tandem with the jailbreak product."Usually the developers of these types of exploits do not concern themselves with larger security threats that come with this behavior. It is a sort of a 'buyer beware' type situation," Armstrong said. Apple announced Thursday it will also be issuing a fix as soon as possible, according to The Wall Street Journal.

To Jailbreak or Not to Jailbreak?

In the meantime, users hoping to protect themselves run into a sticky security situation. First, users of the iPad or iPhone should stay away from unknown PDFs. Also, users face the decision of whether or not to jailbreak their devices. Ironically, in this particular scenario, jailbreaking may be the only way a user can guarantee staying safe.
"Going to jailbreakme.com and jailbreaking their phone will not only fix the PDF vulnerability, but open their device up to a new world of legal freeware, shareware, and other great software just like your desktop," Zdziarski said. Others say that while it's a good safety mechanism, jailbreaking can also open up a world of security concerns. "It's a very difficult decision. If you choose not to jailbreak your device and install the additional patch, you remain vulnerable until Apple releases an official patch. On the other hand, if you jailbreak, you could possibly add additional security holes to your device," said Armstrong.
Jailbreaking one's phone may also void the device's warranty.

Security Concerns on the Rise

Security researchers urge both users and tech companies like Apple and their competitors to be increasingly vigilant as malware, security breaches and malicious hacking become more common in the digital world.
"There's no way to prevent every single security vulnerability, but Apple has been known to be lackadaisical in securing iOS. To many in the open source community, many of their approaches to security seem nonsensical and administratively lazy," Zdziarski said. Others agree that on top of prevention, Apple needs to make it a priority to get fixes to users quickly.
"The most that companies like Apple can do is to follow coding and security best practices to make it as difficult as possible to engineer these types of exploits, and to patch them as quickly as they can once they're discovered," Armstrong told MacNewsWorld. Another way the company can tighten its hold on security and keep iPhone and iPad users happy is to make sure it's not necessary to upgrade software every time a fix comes through.
"The best way Apple can prevent such vulnerabilities from becoming as big of an issue in the future ... is finding ways to deliver small operating system fixes without having to upgrade the device's firmware entirely. Can you imaging how often security vulnerabilities would get fixed if you had to reinstall [Mac OS X] Snow Leopard on your desktop every time there was a new fix?" said Zdziarski.

Apple and the Dogs of Patent War

Patents and patent law have played big roles in Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) business this past week.
For one thing, Apple's chief patent counsel, Richard "Chip" Lutton Jr., will be leaving his post, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.Meanwhile, Apple's patent disputes with Android device makers HTC and Samsung continue; a consortium led by the company is getting its hands on several Nortel (NYSE: NT) patents; and Apple has had a setback in its legal battle to claim copyright over the term "App Store."
In other reaches of the Apple universe, the iPhone continues to be a money-spinner for Cupertino, with a report that it has given Apple 50 percent of the profits made by the smartphone industry, despite having less than 20 percent of the market and losing ground to Android.Analysts continue to debate the possibility of Apple launching one -- or perhaps two -- new iPhones in September.

On the apps front, Cupertino appears unassailable. Apple users are not only buying lots more apps, but they're paying more per app, and the company claims more than 15 billion apps have been downloaded from the iTunes App Store. That could ensure Apple remains dominant in the tablet market, although the best-selling tablets at Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) are Android devices. Cupertino did not respond to requests for comment on several of these issues by press time.
AAPL closed at $353.75 on Tuesday.

Apple and the Patent-Go-Round

Apple's chief patent counsel, Richard "Chip" Lutton, is leaving the company after 10 years and will be replaced by B.J. Watrous, a former deputy general counsel with HP (NYSE: HPQ), Reuters reported.
The departure comes at a time when Apple is tied up in patent litigation with Android device manufacturers HTC, Samsung and Motorola (NYSE: MOT).It's not clear why Lutton is leaving, or how his departure might impact Apple.Meanwhile, a consortium led by Apple has obtained court approval to snap up several patents put on the block by ailing Canadian telecommunications vendor Nortel. These include several smartphone-related patents, many related to LTE, which is becoming a widely adopted 4G wireless technology worldwide.Separately, a federal judge has denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction preventing Amazon from using the term "App Store," but it disagreed with Amazon's claim that the term is purely generic, paving the way for litigation to continue.

Minting Money With the iPhone

Apple snarfed up about 50 percent of the net earnings of the entire handset industry in the first quarter of 2011, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley has reported. The iPhone 4 continued to be the leading smartphone at both AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon in June, Walkley said.Meanwhile, there's lots of speculation over when Apple will release a new iPhone, and what will be unveiled when it does.
Some analysts contend Apple's building two iPhones to be released in September, while others believe it will unveil only one.

The Power of the App

Apple's iOS, which runs on iPhones, iPads and iPod touches, will continue to be the leading mobile operating system, Cannacord Genuity's Walkley stated. That is likely driven by the plethora of apps available for iOS devices.Apple users are reportedly buying 61 percent more apps and paying 14 percent more per app, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a note to investors.Last week, Apple announced that customers have made more that 15 billion app downloads from the iTunes App Store.

iPad on the iThrone?

The best-selling tablets on Amazon.com are Android devices, although the online retail giant also carries iPads."All tablets have been selling very well this year as customers continue to show strong interest in this new category," Amazon spokesperson Anya Waring told MacNewsWorld. "The Toshiba Thrive 10.1-inch Android Tablet currently occupies the No. 1 position," she added.Another possible competitor to the iPad family might come from Amazon itself, which is reported to have plans to bring out its own device.
"A Retrevo survey found that Amazon's very high up on the list that people would buy a tablet from, so they have very good brand recognition, Apple notwithstanding," Andrew Eisner, director of community and content at Retrevo, told MacNewsWorld. However, that threat may not be so lethal.

"The question device manufacturers have to answer is, 'Why are you doing this?'" Michael Morgan, a senior analyst at ABI Research, told MacNewsWorld. "

A lot of people have the technology, but Apple offers a lifestyle." That, Morgan suggested, is why iOS devices are so successful.

Four Amazing Technology Waves That Will Change Your Life

4 Amazing Technology Waves That Will Change Your Life

Last week, Facebook launched its video chat, and it once again reminded me that CEOs really should read the book Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs, because Zuckerberg was really boring. Saying that this was going to be an "awesome" announcement and showcasing basic video chat and group text chat was, and I'm being kind, disappointing. Still, Facebook does have something amazing here -- I just don't think it's worked out yet. But I do think this is the beginning of something big.

Public safety is becoming a vastly more visible issue, as concerns about terrorist retaliation grow. There also appears to be a rapid increase in murders and other violent crimes in city centers, coupled with a massive drawdown in law enforcement. Citizen reporting and video technologies are moving in to fill the gaps -- and this could be even bigger.Tablets are hot, but they aren't done yet. Multitouch and pen are being blended into new products, and tablets are evolving from consumption to creation devices. Finally, the biggest technology wave may be something you haven't even heard of yet: the influx of capacitors to augment batteries and provide for peak power needs, allowing the batteries to last longer and be more reliable alternative energy solutions.I'll close with my product of the week, the Mango release of Windows Phone 7, which potentially takes this platform from catch-up to contender against iOS 4.

The Coming Video Wave

Facebook made the same initial mistake with its video chat feature that virtually every company has made so far with similar services. It assumes that people want to see who they are talking to and be seen while they're talking.
After millions of dollars in trials and post mortem reviews on a number of similar products, I can say categorically that this common belief just isn't true. However, what people do want to do is increasingly share experiences -- and that is at the core of what Facebook does. Video is part of that, but more along the lines of showing what the speaker is seeing and talking about than the speaker themselves.
Think of this more as a blend of Live Meeting, video and Facebook content under the remote control of the folks in the conversation -- that is, I can show what I'm talking about, and the person or people I'm chatting with can do the same.
It is critically important to this that the application be mobile and allow me to show captured video streams rather than just live ones, so I can talk about past events. And there is clearly an opportunity to fire up both cameras on a twin camera smartphone or tablet to get both the speaker (in a small window) and the subject matter at the same time, for real-time chats and citizen video journalism.
Through its partnership with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), Facebook has all of the pieces. Let's see if it puts them together before Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) does.

Public Safety

The combination of more murders and violent crimes (I stopped a burglary-in-progress myself a few weeks back) and less police, coupled with the inability for city 911 and video capture systems to integrate, suggests we have a huge change coming. The events of 9/11 showcased how bad our systems were, and they still aren't much better -- particularly with regard to being able to forward videos and pictures citizens are now capturing from crimes in progress.
I recently had lunch with James Cape of InterAct Public Safety, a company led by ex-Intel heavy hitters, which is putting together a Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) effort to close this technology gap. I fully expect another 9/11-like event to suddenly catapult technologies that will better integrate our smartphone-carrying citizens and distributed video surveillance systems into a more tightly integrated crime early warning and response environment. EMC (NYSE: EMC) is quietly putting massive resources into video surveillance that will play a huge role as this all rolls out.
There have been a number of instances in which people who could have helped, and were willing to, weren't able to. Communications systems couldn't talk to each other, and dispatchers either couldn't locate their first responders or they couldn't give them the critical information being captured by folks at the event site in a timely way. While it may take a major event to fire up the market to put this technology in place, it is only a matter of time till we have another Columbine or World Trade Center event, and suddenly law enforcement will be connected. My hope, of course, is that this time we actually think before acting -- but unfortunately, historically, we tend to act first and make a mess of the result.

Bing Strikes the Right Tone on iPad

Bing Strikes the Right Tone on iPad
Bing, like Google, is now offering a dedicated search app for the iPad. Bing's offering isn't linked to a laundry list of other services like mail and calendar apps, though -- Microsoft's app is focused entirely on search. It features a simple, attractive interface as well as an interesting circle-to-search feature, and it builds in just enough features to be more useful than a built-in search bar but not overly cluttered.

Rattling off a Web search on your phone or tablet is a pretty dead-simple thing to do. Does it really need its own app? That depends.
The iPad's out-of-the-box Safari Web browser has a built-in search bar, and you can set its default search engine to Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) or Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Bing (all apologies, Ask.com fans). It's just a text box, but it will usually suffice for a quick, heat-of-the-moment query.
Bing for iPad

Other searches, though, may require a little more attention. You might want to target it to a certain category of results. Or, if you're a particularly big fan of a certain search engine, you might use that site as your daily informational diving board, the place you go for your morning shot of news and weather.
That's why search engines make their own mobile apps. A mobile app can offer deeper interaction and a snappier interface than a bookmarked page in Safari. And of course, once you're using a branded search app to do you surfing, your adventures out there in the great big Web are really taking place within that app's built-in browser, for better or for worse.
The Big Three (or Big One and the two dwarfs, perhaps?) search providers all have offerings on tap for iPhone, but it's taken a little longer to enhance those apps into iPad material. Just recently, Microsoft put the finishing touches on its Bing app for iPad.

Just Bing, Doing Its Thing

When you fire up Bing for iPad, you're greeted with the engine's usual gallery of hi-res photography -- an ever-changing collection of interesting images from around the world, complete with informational tidbits. None of this has much bearing on what you can actually search for, but hey, free eye candy and fun facts.
The really useful functions are located in the top and bottom margins. Along the top, you have your typical search term bar, as well as icons for a voice search, a list of specific search categories and a settings menu.
Along the bottom: Weather, News, Maps, Movies, Trends and Finance.
Let's get this obvious part out of the way: If you hate the results Bing brings you as a desktop search engine, you won't have much use for this app. Personally, Google is my default searcher, though I venture into Bing now and then. I find Bing to be consistently capable, and once in while it'll come up with a good result that didn't filter anywhere near the top of a Google search.
Typing terms into the text bar in the upper-left corner of Bing's home interface sets you off on a general search. It didn't appear that anything at the top of the results page was a straight-up advertisement, even when I typed a highly etail-ready term like "hats." specialized results are embedded in the list -- a few entries from the top you might see a local search to show you relevant results in your vicinity, for example. And at the bottom you might find special sections with examples of results in Bing Shopping and Bing News.
Turn the iPad to landscape view, and the results page offers new options in the sidebar. You can narrow down your search to the engine's News, Shopping, Local, Videos or Images sections. You'll also see your search history and a list of related searches.
Bing for iPad includes a voice search feature. Like most voice search apps, results were good but not perfect. It took three tries to get my query "filthy desert creature" (inspired by a home screen image of a small wild cat) to go through, for example, but my nine other tries succeeded after the first utterance.
The Settings menu gives you a basic set of controls -- a safesearch selector, history and suggestions toggles, and whether you want it to figure out where you are automatically or have the option of selecting a city yourself. There's also a history and cookie clearer.
Along the bottom are gateways for quickly glancing at news, weather and other information. The News function is especially good-looking -- each section gets its own row of stories (photo plus headline) that can be scrolled through with a swipe. However, the stories are presented as single news sources from top sites like CNN and the AP, not as news bundles a la Google News or Bing's desktop news pages.

Head to Head

Unlike Google's search app for iPad, Bing doesn't offer to sign a user in from the interface. That's because Google's mobile app not only covers search, but also links to apps for other services, and some of them (email and calendar, for example) are highly personal.
Bing's app doesn't even want to know who you are; it just wants to focus on search. Those who experience vaguely ominous feelings when searching the Web while signed on under a Google account may appreciate Bing's focus. Besides, iOS's own Calendar and Mail apps work quite well when synced with a Google account.
Another difference between Bing and Google's iPad app is interface. A few months ago, I wrote that the swipe motions used in Google's search app felt awkward on the iPhone, and that carries over to a lesser degree in the company's iPad app. Bing uses a swipe feature too, but in a much simpler way. You just can swipe across the top of a page to take you back to what you were doing before. Searches are stacked sort of like sheets of paper, one on another. It's a little simpler than the up/down/side-to-side swiping you see on Google's app.
One of the more interesting features built into Bing's integrated browser is the ability to circle to search. Along the top of any Web page, you'll find a set of icons -- one for emailing/copying the link, one for highlighting the term, a reload button, back and forward toggles and a magnifying glass. The magnifying glass is a search feature that lets you select a word or term with which to perform a new search. You can draw a circle around the text (kind of like drawing a circle in MS Paint, actually), then click what's inside it, and suddenly that term is plugged into the text box, no copy/paste required.

Apple Iphone Photo Stream

Apple follows Amazon, Google into cloud computing

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple chief executive Steve Jobs  ushered his company — and, by extension, the global computing industry — into the "cloud" era.
"We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud," Jobs said.
The new iCloud service replaces Apple's MobileMe document-sharing offering, which cost $99 a year. The new iCloud service is free, Jobs said. With iCloud, content such as music and documents is stored on large servers instead of on personal hard drives — and is accessible from anywhere via the Internet.
The new iCloud service is Apple's seal of approval on what many experts think is the next major iteration of the digital world.
All of Apple's devices today "have communications systems built into them," Jobs said. "They can all talk to the cloud. Everything syncs without us having to think about it. We don't even have to take it out of my pocket."Perhaps the biggest star of the iCloud service is the new iTunes function that lets people download songs to as many as 10 devices, instead of five, at no extra cost.
"This is the first time we have seen this in the music industry — no charge for multiple downloads for different devices," Jobs said. "Any song I buy on any device will automatically be downloaded to all my devices."
The iTunes part of iCloud is available today with an iOS 4.3 update, with other iCloud features coming in the fall.
Apple will provide 5 gigabytes of free storage on iCloud for mail, documents and backup.
Jobs, who has been on medical leave, took the stage at Moscone Center for the kickoff of Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference. As Jobs strolled onto the stage, he basked in the applause as one member of the audience shouted, "We love you."
"Thank you. It always helps, and I appreciate it very much," Jobs said.

Scott Forstall , Apple's senior vice president of  iPhone software, said 25 million iPads have been sold and more than 14 billion apps have been sold through the App Store. He introduced iOS 5, the latest operating system for the iPhone and iPad. The new software, which will ship in the fall, allows owners to set up and activate their devices without being connected to a computer. Software updates will be available "over the air," Forstall said.
"We are living in a PC-free world. With the iPad, we are ushering in the post-PC world," he said. "If you want to cut the cord, you can."
Hours before the event, thousands of developers ringed the city block around the Moscone West building. Mimes dressed in colorful full-body suits performed in front of the waiting engineers. Free coffee was offered to the chilly faithful, some of whom camped out overnight.
"It's a bit of a cult — maybe more than a cult," said Martin Roth, chief technology officer of music-app developer Reality Jockey.
Roth had flown in Saturday from London and hoped to be in line early enough to be among the fortunate few squeezed into the auditorium with Jobs.

Users can easily add quick notes and tasks which can be edited and expanded at a later time. Similarly, reminder alerts and due dates are quickly and easily entered. Flipping through color-coded pages of to-dos is fast and effortless. And at any time, the user may select any item and drill down for additional details.
Priorities makes it easy to share pages with other users. List-makers who want to share their shopping page with their spouse can simply send an email invitation to share their shopping page. Users can add, edit, delete, and check off items, and the items will be synchronized between devices. In addition, the app supports data backup and syncing with multiple devices via Hand Carved Code’s secure server.

Location Sharing For Iphone Users....Amazing Iphone Application

Announcing that. Gani Software Pty Ltd., the developers of Koko, has released their latest product for iPhone users. Koko is a new launch, an application that makes it super easy for users to share their location, in an SMS or map, with any internet capable phone. The app is ready to use as is, without the hassle of sign ups, logins, feature unlocking, configuration or installation for recipients and lets users know who their incoming location messages are from. Currently, Gani Software is offering Koko free of charge.

Gani Software is proud to announce the launch of their latest application, called Koko. The word Koko means “Here” in Japanese, making it the perfect name for a location sharing app.Koko offers users a unique experience, where they are able to share locations via SMS or a map, with anyone who has an internet browser on their phone. Users are free to specify a location themselves or let the GPS automatically get a fix on their position. A map message can then be sent to others with merely a press of the ‘Send’ button.

All transmissions in Koko are selective, with nothing being shared until the user actually sends a location message and then, it is only revealed to the specified recipients. All incoming messages are identified on the screen, so a user can tell in a glance who has shared their location with them.

This is a completely hassle-free application. Once a user has installed Koko on their devices, the user does not have to sign up, log in, unlock features, or configure anything to start using Koko. It’s ready to go, once on the sender’s device. Users merely…use it.

powermat wireless charger for Iphone

one of the clear trends coming out of this year’s CES is smart design. rather than introduce
a slew of new flashy gadgets, companies are focusing on solving design issues that have
been created by years of poor design. powermat is a revolutionary new design which aims
to help frustrated users charge their army of battery powered devices. however instead of
fumbling with power cords and adaptors, powermat charges your phone, mp3 player and
other gadgets wirelessly. the system works with a non-conductive powermat which syncs
with receivers attached to your devices. powermat eventually hopes that manufacturers
will integrate wireless charging receivers into devices making syncing even easier. the mat
will retail for around 100 USD and the receivers will be around 35 USD when the system is
launched later this year. it will still be awhile until we truly know if this products helps ease
the gadget charging dilemma

Just Mobile Xtand for iPhone + iPhone 3G

Xtand
I’ve been using one of these for a few weeks, and it’s an absolutely brilliant stand for your iPhone. Matching perfectly with Apple’s Cinema Display, it can hold your iPhone in either a vertical or horizontal orientation.
It’s a sturdy base on which to use the phone at your desk.

The "stand" is a dying breed of accessory. As distinguished from a "dock," which mounts an iPod or iPhone while containing electronics that enable it to output audio or video, a stand is designed merely to hold the device above the surface of a table -- functionality that some users won't care about, especially given that stands can cost as much or more than docks. Only a handful of companies still make stands these days, and there haven't been many great-looking ones over the past few years. Just Mobile's Xtand for iPhone ($50 $40) is an exception. Updated August 18, 2008: Just Mobile has released an updated version of the Xtand, which we discuss further at the bottom of this review, originally published on June 16, 2008. Our ratings differ between the two versions as noted above.

Designed to match the bodies of Apple’s Cinema Displays and metal iMacs, Xtand is sold in two main pieces: an iPhone cradle that holds the first-generation iPhone with rubberized corners and a molded aluminum frame, plus a curved stand that looks like Apple’s monitor stands, down to the hole in the center for cable management. You connect the two pieces with a rubber washer and screw-based tightening system that lets you adjust the iPhone’s height and rotation, with slight tweaks to its angle as well. Rubber pads on the stand keep it in place, and unscuffed, on a flat surface.

There’s very little to complain about in Xtand’s execution. Just Mobile’s design, while clearly heavily influenced by Apple’s, offers iPhone users the opportunity to completely match the look of Apple’s desktop machines with what can look like a miniature monitor for video or widescreen album browsing, shifting effortlessly to a vertical mode appropriate to most of the iPhone’s other features. The rubber corners hold the iPhone properly while providing access to all of the ports and controls, including the speakerphone and Dock Connector, headphone port and volume buttons. In other words, your iPhone is as useful inside Xtand as it is in your hand, but more conveniently mounted for viewing and other tabletop use. Xtand was clearly engineered with considerable thought and precision; everything just works.

The only issue we experienced during testing of Xtand was one that we couldn’t reproduce a second time. Once, when the iPhone was placed in the cradle, we noticed that the battery was discharging at a surprising rate—something that can happen when the cellular antenna is struggling to make or maintain a connection with a local phone tower. As the X-shaped cradle exposes most of the iPhone’s plastic antenna chamber, but does obscure its corners slightly, it appears that the metal may under some conditions present an issue—however, after days of continued attempts to let the problem reoccur, it didn’t. We wondered whether the iPhone’s back had come in contact temporarily with the unpadded center point of the X-shaped cradle, but couldn’t be certain. Our feeling is that future Xtand could be designed to further cut the use of metal around an iPhone’s antennas, precluding wireless interference.

Sound-charging t-shirt will debut at Glastonbury Festival

Music Lover at UK’s Glastonbury Festival will enjoy with Sound Charging T-Shirt that can charge a cell phone. This amazing product is launched by Orange Called “Sound Charge” that is even better application than Iphone.  It  was produced in conjunction with renewable energy designers GotWind. Orange has tested other green charging technologies at past Glastonbury Festivals, including 2010’s Power Wellies, boots that converted heat into current to keep people connected to their devices.
The t-shirt’s technology uses Piezoelectric film, found in modern HI-FI speakers. The Piezoelectric film acts like an oversized microphone, absorbing sound waves and turning them into electric charge. The electricity gets stored in a battery that then charges the cellphone. According to Orange, the interchangeable lead should fit most cellphone models. Unlike the solar bikini’s skimpy design that fails to capture a significant amount of energy from the sun, the t-shirt has a large surface area, which means it can capture a good amount of sound pressure waves.

The Piezoelectric film panel and electronics can be removed, allowing dirty festival-goers to wash the t-shirt likely to be coated in sweat, tears, booze and other side-effects of an outdoor music festival. Orange estimates that when used at the festival with sound levels of around 80dB, which is about the same as a busy street, the t-shirt will generate up to 6 W/h of power over the course of the weekend. I don’t think they’ll have a noise issue. Though wearers of the t-shirt will most likely use it for a quick top up rather than a full charge, it should be able to power two standard mobile phones or one smartphone. Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing these things at the mall anytime soon, as Orange hopes to inspire future development and won’t be developing them for mass production.

Hit the trails with Brackertron all-weather soft case bike mount

Just in time for the summer! If you’re the type that likes to hit up the mountain trails with your bike, but you have come to rely on your smartphone for everything from mobile music to GPS navigation, then this new product from Bracketron could be a good fit. Literally.\

Called the All-Weather Soft Case Bike Mount, it is a mobile device mount that’ll accept not only your iPhone, but also a variety of MP3 players, smartphones, and other similarly-sized electronics. They say that they are targeting both recreational and competitive cyclists. Basically, you can mount your mobile device to your handlebars while still being able to use the touchscreen behind the clear protector. And yes, the whole shi-bang is weather resistant, in case you happen to get caught in a shower.

No tools are needed, since this’ll mount with an adjustable C-clamp. That should fit most handlebars with its three latch levels. I’m not much of a cyclist, especially when it comes to mountain trails, but I might break out the bike for some city rides this summer. This would certainly come in handy for that. Find the All-Weather Soft Case Bike Mount now for $39.95 through Bracketron.com. It’ll hit REI retail stores next month too.

Google Plus First Look.............

Google + Launched.... Amazing Social Networking Website

It’s hard to imagine that there is a Facebook killer somewhere around the next tech innovation, but there probably is. Granted, in the end, it won’t look much like a “killer” but probably closer to something new, shiny and different that has enough new whiz bang boom to garner attention.

Many thought that this was what would become of Twitter, because it seemed so much easier and simpler than the more complex neediness of Facebook. Who couldn’t create a 140-character message? Twitter was (and still is) a much more mobile-friendly experience. On top of that, it’s easy to add, find and share with friends and there is something about the limitation of the message that makes the barrier to entry fairly low (even though many who jump on the Twitter bandwagon find themselves struggling to understand how to find and follow people while grappling with the new language of hashtags, retweets and URL shorteners).

What we’ve learned in the online social networking of Facebook and Twitter is that there is more codependency between the two platforms than walled gardens that users are not allowed to cross.
The most recent attempt to kill Facebook was launched last week with Google’s brand-new online social network called, Google +. Currently, it’s a closed environment that can only be accessed if you’re invited, and by the looks of the online chatter, Google is allowing people with significant Social Media experience in first to see how it stands up, performs and gets chatted about prior to opening the flood gates for all to use. There is widespread skepticism about Google’s ability to be successful in the online social networking space. In the past, they’ve made strong attempts with Orkut, Wave and Buzz but the overall results paled in comparison to the success of Twitter or Facebook. With Google +, users can create “circles” that allow them to segment their connections (i.e. friends, family, co-workers, etc. …), they can follow or create an area of shared interest called a “spark” (let’s say you’re into Thai cuisine or mixed martial arts or eating Thai cuisine while watching mixed martial arts), you can share your images or even create a live get-together known as a “hangout,” and the integration between the Web and mobile experience looks seamless (with the one exception being that the iPhone app is not available yet).

Google + is a fast becoming an Internet sensation as was evident earlier last week when Google was forced to suspend Google+ invite following an “insane demand” for its social networking service. But does it have what it takes to challenge Facebook and other existing social networking sites?
Google+, unlike previous social networking products/services launched by Google, is here to stay. Though it is in the beta version, yet, it has met with overwhelming response and rumor has it that even the Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also opened a Google+ account.

Why? Because Google+ has several amazing features that promise to change the way we interact, socialize and connect to others over the Internet.

Features of Google +

1) Circles - The Circles concept more closely follows the way you organize your contacts in real life. We meet different kinds of people everyday and interact with them in many different ways. Circles offers a simple means of organizing one's social network by grouping contacts into anything you can possibly imagine - family, friends, co-workers, etc. The groups can be formed by dragging the contact's picture/photo over a circle that represents the group (a group of people can also be dragged over a circle!)

2) Stream – Stream helps you receive instant updates from your friends and other contacts in your Circles list. It helps you decide and choose which circles and individuals you want to share your information with.

3) Sparks – Sparks pulls in stories, videos and other cool content relating to your specific interest. According to Google, the content in Sparks stream is different from the results you'd get if you put the same term into the search engine. Through Sparks, you can get an instant fountain of relevant information to share with friends. After you are asked to choose from a list of possible interests (biking, sailing, etc.), or to put your own specific interest, Google+ goes out and searches almost completely on-topic content from all over the Web.

4) Hangouts - Hangouts allows up to 10 users to video chat. All users can speak simultaneously and the loudest speaker takes the center stage.

5) Huddle - Huddle is a group SMS conversation feature where mobile phone numbers of members will be visible to all.

6) Instant Upload – Instant Upload allows the user to upload pictures and videos directly from the phone

HypnosEye iPhone Projector......"Amazing iphone gadget"

The HypnosEye is a nifty little gadget that allows you to instantly turn your iPhone into a projector! It relies purely on the light from the iPhone touch screen so it doesn't require any power. (However, it will only work when the environment is relatively dark). Use it in your office, in a bar, or virtually anywhere! It's perfect if you want to share your photos with friends. Please beware that the outer edges of the projected image may appear slightly out of focus due to the limitations of the device.

No, we’re not talking about the iPhone getting its very own built-in projector here, but the HypnosEye can connect to your iPhone, iPod touch or other mobile devices while projecting it via a separate light source by using a special anti-glare mirror and lens to blow up the screen onto a projection surface. The HypnosEye claims that you are able to project an image from 17? to 45? diagonal from a projection distance of 0.5 to 2 meters away, but that remains to be seen until tested. Needless to say, you’ll need to reduce the lights to a very dim level in order to see your images. Each purchase of the HypnosEye kit is equipped with both the projection lens unit and a portable 17? diagonal projection surface, retailing for $80 a pop.

How to save your Laptop from being theft !

Laptop locks.A thief can snatch an unattended laptop from a desk and walk away in a matter of seconds. And a thief who has your laptop may have access to your files and personal information. A notebook lock won’t prevent someone from cutting the cable, but it can deter crimes of opportunity.
Laptop locks.
Using a laptop lock is an uncomplicated way to avoid having your hardware stolen–and it can keep your data from falling into the wrong hands.Kensington is probably best-known for its notebook locks; it offers an array of locks for laptops and desktops. Targus is a second vendor that specializes in laptop security gear, including one lock that sounds an alarm when someone tries to pick up the attached laptop or cut the lock cable.

Prying eyes are a common security hazard. To prevent unauthorized viewing of your data when you step away from your desk, always lock your screen before leaving your PC unattended. To do this, simply hold down the Windows key and type the letter L. This will bring up the lock screen. To get back to work, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and enter your login password at the prompt.
Laptop locks.
A simple laptop lock can suffice to discourage an opportunistic thief. But don’t leave the keys next to the machine.Another way to shield your screen is to install a privacy filter over the display. These filters fit directly on a monitor so other people can’t peer over your shoulder and see what’s on the screen. A privacy filter may be particularly useful if you work in an “open” office that lacks cubicle walls. Various companies sell these filters, including Targus, 3M, and Fellowes.

Smart IPhone User it’s time to save yourself so beware !

Smart phone users beware – computer virus writers are setting their sights on you.
A report, released by Symantec today, shows data on Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android smart phones are at risk as the writers of malicious software turn their attention to smartphones.
Symantec spokesman Peter Sparkes told the Waikato Times applications smartphone users download through online stores could include malicious software and had security implications for the smartphone and any work or home computer network it was plugged into.
”They are becoming more sophisticated,” Mr Sparkes said.
Users are often wary of email scams, but don’t think twice about downloading an application
                                    iPhone
”A gentleman from Nigeria on the phone is probably not going to put $10,000 into your bank account,” Mr Sparkes said.
The report found smart phones were more secure than traditional computers, but both iPhones and Android phones were still vulnerable.
Apple’s security model offered more protection against traditional malware, due to rigorous application certification process but Google had opted for a less rigorous certification model allowing any software developer to release applications without inspection.
Synchronising phones with third-party services could potentially expose sensitive data on work and home computers.
Carey Nachenberg, Symantec Chief Architect, said mobile devices were a mixed bag when it came to security.
”While more secure than traditional PCs, these platforms are still vulnerable to many traditional attacks.”
“Symantec” is developing a smart phone security package called Norton Mobile Security which can be downloaded, for free, from its website. Visit www.us.norton.com/mobile-security/ for the beta version.
